Earl of Sandwich opened it's doors back in 2004 when Disney Springs was called "Downtown Disney". Back then, it was one of the lower cost dining options in the Disney bubble, and it still is. The location is more or less, a sandwich shop… that also offers wraps, salads, soup, some baked goods and desserts, plus breakfast items.

The backstory, is a little more complicated. The restaurant (which is now a franchise with multiple locations), was founded by the actual 11th son of the Earl of Sandwich, Lord John Montagu and his son. The Honorable Orlando Montagu and his father are direct descendants of the 4th Earl who loved sandwiches so much (back in the 18th century), he's basically thought of as the guy who created the modern day sandwich.

But that's not only where the "Earl" in the restaurant name comes from. Robert Earl (from the Cooking Channel's "Be My Guest") and founder of Planet Hollywood, more or less was like "hey, you guys should open a sandwich shop in Downtown Disney, it's a great place with all kinds of foot traffic, I'll even invest in that". So, I choose to believe the place is named and located where it is because — it's Robert "Earl" plus the 11th son of the Earl of Sandwiche's son Orlando Montagu — which equals "The Earl of Sandwich in Orlando", where you can order "The Full Montagu" which is a delightful 18th century style sandwich combining roasted beef, turkey, swiss and cheddar cheese, lettuce, roma tomatoes and the Earl's own mustard sauce... placed on top of fresh, house-made lightly toasted bread.
