Sunshine Seasons is one of my favorite counter service locations for lunch or dinner. Located in the Land Pavilion, the food-court style dining location seems to flow better than any other in-park counter service restaurant. They also have all five food groups covered… salads, stir-fry, oak grilled things, soda and dessert. Okay, I'm pretty sure those aren't the five food groups, but they're all done very well at Sunshine Seasons, and done well visit, after visit, after visit… something that can't be said about other locations at Disney.
Early one morning I decided to stop by for breakfast… something I have never actually done at Sunshine Seasons. Sadly, I found the offerings to be a little lack-luster. There was nothing bad about the food per say, it's just that the diversity and quality that is there for lunch and dinner, is not present for breakfast. There are not too many things on the menu, but what is on the menu, falls into the "really nice continental breakfast" category.
The flow of the place still worked. Even though there were moderate lines everywhere, it seemed to move right along, so no complaints there. The large multi-segmented dining area (spring, summer, winter, and fall) offered quite a few seating options and the tables seemed clean and orderly.
Menu-wise, there are some baked goods from the always yummy dessert area... although most of the "morning" baked good (pastries, muffins, and whatnot) fall into the "grab it yourself from the display case" category. Over in the hot plated food line, there's a cinnamon roll (which I had high hopes for), something called "overnight oats" (I didn't ask… I don't want to know), and then four other things (a standard platter, french toast bread pudding platter, breakfast panini, and a breakfast wrap)… that were all basically different variations of the same thing. Most had scrambled eggs, maybe some bacon, different sides for color… avocado and tofu in the wrap, tomato and arugula in the sandwich… you get the idea.
Because many guests will get the standard "Breakfast Platter" I decided to give that one a go… it contains quite a few of the elements all on one plate. Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Sausage, Breakfast Potatoes and Cinnamon French Toast Bread Pudding.
It was all fine and served hot, the bacon was a bit soggy, but I suppose that's a preference. The sausage was not over-the-top spiced and was fairly mild, the two links were good and not overly fatty either (for a sausage that is). The only real standout on the platter was the Cinnamon French Toast Bread Pudding (which is probably why it gets it's own platter… for a little bit less money, but is only served with bacon). I'm not really sure how or why the words "French Toast" get used in the description… it was "cut" and served on the plate, but it's a lot more like straight out Bread Pudding than any sort of French Toast.
There was a light hint of Cinnamon in the not-so-sweet Bread Pudding, and what seemed to be a stronger hint of cardamom. A good mix, and very tasty. It's not going to be one of those "I gotta got to Sunshine Seasons for breakfast" kind of items though.
I had high hopes for the warm Cinnamon Roll because there's nothing like a warm Cinnamon Roll for breakfast… or any time of the day! With Sunshine Season's baked goods and dessert station serving up so many delicious items, I was expecting the Cinnamon Roll to be amazing. Here again, it fell into the "just okay" category.
It was really light, kind of puffy, and not very yeasty, cinnamon-y, or vanilla icing-y. This was probably a "not too horrible for you" take on a Cinnamon Roll, but frankly… if I'm eating one for breakfast… I want it to be "bad for me", loaded with butter and sugar, 1500 calorie kind of delicious… this one wasn't. Oh how I miss those hot Cinnamon Buns from the old Main Street Bakery. Sigh.
Hey, if you're in the area, Sunshine Season's breakfast is fine. In fact, it's the only game in town if we're talking about the whole front-side of Epcot from gate open until about 11am. It's not a bad choice, it just didn't hit the same marks that the lunch or dinner periods do. If you're only going to visit Sunshine Seasons once… visit after 11:30am.
